With the natural craftsmanship of wood there are so many different types of styles available to meet your needs we can’t list them here, but will be glad to work with you to make the best choice for your project. From the fine Victorian finish of Fancy Butt Shingles to the rustic appeal of hand-split and re-sawn Shakes there is a cedar product perfect for you.

A Quick Primer on the Difference between Shakes vs. Shingles

These two types of cedar products can sometimes be confusing but the main points to remember are the following:

Shakes are available hand-split, re-sawn or sawn on both sides. They are most popular on traditional, ranch or vacation homes to blend with the natural environment.

Shingles generally have a smoother uniform look that gives a more tailored appearance. Some Shingles are even specifically manufactured to deliver a variety of architectural designs.

No matter if you are choosing shakes or shingles, Western Red Cedar roofing products have impressive R-values to conserve energy, they are wind resistant up to hurricane levels, impact resistant to hail damage and with the proper pressure treatment they are as fire retardant as any other Class A, B or C rated roofing product including asphalt, metal and concrete tile.

When you are selecting an environmentally friendly material for your home ask yourself the following questions.

Is the product a renewable resource or extracted from the earth like limestone?

How much energy was used to produce the product?

Is the left over waste product recyclable or does it linger in a landfill for decades?

Wood is the environmentally sound choice of building products as it is non-toxic, renewable, efficient to produce, recyclable and ultimately biodegradable.
